How to pick a piñata that won't end in tears

Pull-string versus swing-and-break, and which of our five designs actually suits a three-year-old.

A piñata sounds like the easy part of the party until the youngest kid in the yard realizes everyone else gets a turn with the bat and he doesn’t. The design you pick decides whether that moment happens.

Two different piñatas, not one

Most of what people picture when they hear “piñata,” a blindfolded kid swinging a bat while everyone counts down, is really one style out of two. Our Happy Birthday piñata is a pull-string design: a ring of ribbons hangs underneath, one of them releases the candy, and there’s no bat or blindfold involved at all. It’s the one we’d point a parent of a toddler or a mixed-age group toward, since a two-year-old can take a turn alongside a nine-year-old without anyone needing supervision with a stick in their hand.

The rest of the lineup, Watermelon, Guitar, Orca and our fashion doll design, are the traditional swing-and-break kind. Better for a crowd old enough to take turns safely and wait for their turn at a distance, which in practice means keeping everyone who isn’t swinging well back and letting one adult manage the line.

Matching the design to the party

We don’t sell these as themed exclusives. Watermelon works for a summer party as easily as it works for nothing in particular. The guitar suits a music-loving kid without committing to a full theme around it, and the orca is just a good-looking piñata if nobody in the house has a strong opinion about the theme. None of the five are licensed characters, so there’s nothing to match to a specific franchise and nothing that dates the party a year later in photos.

Buying one

Piñatas are sold outright, not rented, and you’re welcome to buy one without booking a castle at all. Most people add one to a castle booking since we’re already coming to the address, but it’s not a package deal. See the current five designs and ask for prices when you book, either alongside a castle or on its own.
